[ARCHIVED] Riverside & Niles Beach Pump Station Upgrades

Construction improvements to the City's sewer system at two City-owned sewer pump stations are currently ongoing and are being financed by the Massachusetts Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF #6683).

The CWSRF program is administered by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) with joint funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This project consists of the rehabilitation of the Riverside Avenue and Niles Beach sewer pump stations. The work includes new submersible pumping equipment systems (Riverside and Niles Beach), new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system equipment (Riverside and Niles Beach), new above-grade concrete electrical enclosures (Riverside and Niles Beach), new permanent standby generator (Riverside) and portable generator (Niles Beach), electrical, instrumentation and site work improvements (Riverside and Niles Beach), and final site and landscape restoration (Riverside and Niles Beach).

This rehabilitation work will provide necessary upgrades/improvements to key process mechanical, instrumentation and controls, and electrical systems needed to maintain continuous sewer service at each pump station. In addition, the improvements at Niles Beach Pump Station will include a flood-proof electrical enclosure and watertight access hatches to mitigate the impacts of climate change and projected sea level rise on the City’s sewer collection system. The proposed upgrades are specifically designed to help reduce maintenance required to keep the pump stations operational and improve operational performance at these pump stations.

CWSRF programs operate around the country to provide states and communities the resources necessary to maintain and improve infrastructure that protects our valuable water resources nationwide.
