Becoming a Firefighter
The Gloucester Fire Department hires off of a state civil service list which is established from a statewide exam. These exams are conducted by Massachusetts Civil Service every other April on the even-numbered years.
The Gloucester Fire Department operates two transporting Advanced Life Support (ALS) units and requires hiring Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedics to the extent allowed by Civil Service laws and the rulings of the Human Resources Division (per the Contractual Bargaining Agreement with the Gloucester Firefighters Local L-762 IAFF). It is currently required for anyone considering becoming a Gloucester Firefighter to be a licensed EMT-Paramedic to be considered.
