Service Dog Guidelines For City Beaches

Welcome to Gloucester! By City ordinance, with the exception of service dogs, dogs are not allowed on Gloucester beaches during the summer months.

Under federal law, for those who may require a service dog because of a disability, please be aware of the following:

• You are allowed to take your service dog anywhere that you may go, including into the water.

 • Your service dog must be harnessed, leashed, tethered or otherwise controlled at all times.

• You must immediately clean up any mess that results from your service dog while on the beach.

• You are solely responsible for the care and custody of your service dog while on the beach.

• If your service dog poses a risk to the health or safety of others, we will ask that you remove your service dog from the beach immediately.

Please note, under federal laws dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service dogs and therefore will not be allowed to enter the beach.

Thank you for your cooperation!
